Wayne jumps out to 28-0 lead by end of first quarter and never looks back.
The Wayne Warriors scored early and often Friday they defeated Troy 49-7 Friday at Heidkamp Stadium.
It wasn’t Ahmad Wagner catching D’Mitrick Trice’s touchdown passes like the Warriors’ big win over Troy last season. This year, it was quarterback Messiah DeWeaver throwing touchdown passes and Wayne’s stout running game rolling over the Troy.
Wayne, the Div. I state runner-up a year ago, looks like a frontrunner to make it to Columbus again. Wayne beat Moeller in week two and had little trouble in its other two games before Friday.
“We knew what they were capable of,” Troy head coach Matt Burgbacher said after the game. “Their passing game is very sound and their running attack is ferocious. They stuffed us on defense as well. I told the kids not to feel sorry for themselves as one game does not make a season.”
Wayne scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and three in the second to take a 49-0 lead.
Wayne rushed 31 times for 212 yards on the ground and DeWeaver completed 10 of 12 attempts for 197 yards and three touchdowns.
Receiver Matt Wilcox led the charge for the Warriors by catching five passes for 87 yards receiving. L’Christian Smith had 85 yards receiving on three catches. Daryl McCleskey also caught two passes for 29 yards receiving.
Fred Pitts rushed for 50 yards, while Antwand Wilson rushed for 39 yards and Josh Foster ran for 35 yards.
“We came out believing that we needed no big plays from Wayne and that was just not going to happen,” Burgbacher said. “They have so many weapons on offense. They just might be the number one team in Ohio. We gave a great team effort and played with a lot of fight and toughness. At any time we never game up.”
Troy had 117 yards on offense on 32 plays. Kotwica completed of 9 of 20 attempts for 77 yards in the first half. Marc Scordia had 10 yards on 12 carries to lead the Trojans.
Troy finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when Hayata Nagata receiving a 39 yard touchdown pass from Kotwica.
