TROY — Troy contained running back Trotwood-Madison Raveion Hargrove most of the night night long but quarterback Markell Stephens-Peppers more than made up the difference by throwing threw touchdown passes and running for another in a 48-0 win.
Hargrove started the rout by running 9 yards for a touchdown, which was about all for him. Stephens got his game going by throwing to receiver William McDaniel and Dallas Daniels for TD receptions for the Rams. Both passes were from 50 yards and 35 yards.
“He threw very well tonight ” said Troy coach Matt Burbacher. “What really makes him is his running ability. That is where he has improved from two yerars ago. Trotwood has beaten 12 or 13 teams each of the last two seasons”
Rams closed out the scoring of the first half with Stephens-Peppers hooking up with William McDaniel for a 50-yard touchdown to put Trotwood up 28-0 at the half.
Troy was finally able to move the ball after Shane Shoop ran for 35 yards to the Trotwood 7-yard line, but the drive failed after turning the ball over on downs.
The second half started just as bad for the Trojans as Troy QB Sam Coleman was intercepted by Ke’waun Garrett who ran it back for a pick-six touchdown from 30 yards.
Following a Trojan fumble recovery by John Wehrcamp, Troy had great field position at the Trotwood 15-yard line but again turned the ball over on downs. Rams RB William McDaniel busted through the Troy line and scampered 70 yards for another Trotwood touchdown. Trotwood scored again with Preston Yeldell scoring from 15 yards out to seal a 48-0 Trotwood lead.
You can put this loss on me,” Burgbacher said. “Starting tomorrow morning we need to get after it. Lift weights tomorrow and have a great practice next with one less day to prepare for Xenia. We have nine games left with six of those at home. We got a dose of reality tonight. Trotwood just handed it to us.”
