Shawnee running back Jalen Nelson and quarterback Saalih Muhammad ran over Troy’s defense in route to a 31-28 victory last night at Troy Memorial Stadium. The Braves accumulated 386 yards in in the game.
Up 24-22 over Troy at the start of the fourth quarter, Shawnee killed time on a long drive and capped it off with a two-yard touchdown run from Nelson with 4:55 left to boost Shawnee’s lead to 31-22. Troy quarterback Matt Barr threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Alex Magoteaux two minutes later, but the Braves ran out the clock on several runs from Nelson on the next drive to end the game.
Muhammad was six-of-11 passing for 79 yards and one interception and also rushed 14 times for 114 yards and one touchdown. Nelson rushed 22 times for 141 yards and one touchdown TD. Dusty Seelig had 48 yards on five carries and Clay Phillips rushed for 50 yards on seven carries with two rushing touchdowns.
Shawnee started game with a 11-play drive that ended with a field goal from 28 yards by Kaitlin Gregory to give the visiting Braves a 3-0 lead. Sophomore QB Saalih Muhammad finished the scoring in the first quarter with a 44-yard touchdown run and after the extra point kick by Gregory the Braves had a 10-0 lead.
Shawnee’s defense forced Troy to punt on all three first quarter possessions.
Troy’s offense finally got started in second quarter. The Trojans drove to the Shawnee 9-yard line and on second and goal quarterback Matt Barr passed to sophomore WR Austin Kyzer for a 9-yard touchdown. Derek Burghardt kicked the extra point to limit Shawnee’s lead to 10-7.
Troy’s defense forced a punt and the Trojans got great field position at the Shawnee 44-yard line. Miles Hibbler ran 56 yards for a touchdown to put Troy up 14-10.
Shawnee’s offense responded on its next drive. Clay Phillips ran for a 24 yard touchdown to cap off a five-play, 40-yard drive to give the Braves a 17-14 lead at the end of the half.
Troy got the ball at the start of the third quarter. Shawnee had several penalities on the drive, but the Trojans couldn’t convert a fourth down with an incomplete pass by Matt Barr. Shawnee promptly went 65 yards on 7 plays as Clay Phillips scored his second rushing touchdowns from 2 yards out.
Troy offense’s again stalled on a fourth-down play and Shawnee got the ball back with 2:14 left in third quarter. On the next play junior LB Tristan Wright intercepted an errant throw by Muhammad and returned it 42 yards for a Troy touchdown. The extra point attempt was dropped by holder Alex Magoteaux. He picked it up and ran around the right end and to score a two-point conversion and limit Shawnee’s lead to 24-22.
Barr was 13 of 26 in passing attempts for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Miles Hibbler led Troy with 95 rushing yards on eight attempts and one touchdown and Brandon Lee had 31 yards on eight carries.
Shawnee had 11 penalties for 95 yards and Troy had 3 penalties for 15 yards.
The Trojans play Xenia at Cox Field next Friday at 7 p.m., while Shawnee hosts Carroll.
