Braves beat Northwestern 4-3 in eight innings to advance to second round of tournament.
SPRINGFIELD — Wes Doyle hit a single that scored Seth Gray and gave Shawnee a 4-3 over Northwestern in a sectional tournament opener on Tuesday night.
Gray got the eighth started for Shawnee with a single to right field, and Nathan Bostick was intentionally walked after that to put two men on base. Northwestern then walked Andrew Tincher to get to Doyle, who was 0-for-4 in the game before his last at-bat. Doyle hit a popup to left field to score Gray from third and earn the Braves the win.
Gray was 4-for-4 in the game with one RBI and scored two runs. Tincher was 2-for-3 with one RBI, and Michael Guyer was 2-for-4.
Shawnee had 11 hits in the game to Northwestern’s two, but the Warriors took advantage of Shawnee’s early mistakes.
Tincher started the game on the mound but struggled. He walked three batters and hit one in the first inning, which gave Northwestern a 1-0 lead. The Braves brought Gray in to finish the first with one out and the bases loaded, and Northwestern scored one more run on a fielder’s choice to take a 2-0 lead.
Kalen Fredrick pitched the last five innings for the Braves and gave up two hits and one earned run with six strikeouts.
Shawnee battled back with two runs in the second inning, including one that came after a triple from Gray. Northwestern scored in the fourth off of a single from Cole Baldwin, but the Braves answered in the bottom of the inning when Tanner Vanvelzor scored on a single from Tincher.
Gage Vorhees picked up the loss on the mound for Northwestern. He struck out seven batters in the game.
Shawnee (15-10) advances to face No. 3 seed Bellefontaine (17-9) in a second-round game on Thursday. The Braves lost by one run twice in regular season to Bellefontaine in CBC play. Shawnee hosts Benjamin Logan tomorrow in a regular season game.
Northwestern finishes with an 11-14 overall record.
Baseball: Southeastern 13, Middletown Christian 3
Southeastern unloaded six runs in the third inning to break open a two-run lead and jump start a 13-3 run-rule win in six innings.
The No. 4 seed Trojans (11-15) advance to play No. 6 Cedarville at home on Thursday in a second round sectional game. Southeastern won both times the teams played in OHC action in regular season.
Eli Tuttle and Trevor King both went 2-for-2 at the plate on Tuesday for Southeastern. Tuttle scored two runs, and King scored one run. Austin Snodgrass went 2-for-4 and also scored two runs.
Austin Spears picked up the win on the mound for Southeastern. He struck out six in four innings, allowed five hits and one earned run.
Jarod Hamlin went 2-for-3 for Middletown Christian and scored one run.
Softball: West Jefferson 4, Southeastern 2
Kennedy Campbell hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to power the Roughriders to a 4-2 win over Southeastern in a regular season game on Tuesday.
Southeastern scored two runs in the third to tie the game at 2-2, but couldn’t cool West Jefferson’s bats in the sixth. West Jefferson had two hits in the inning and took advantage of a fielding error to put runners in scoring position for Campbell.
Madi McKee went 3-for-3 for the Trojans, but only two other Southeastern players had hits in the game. Logan McFann picked up the loss in the circle.
Annie Haenszel and Emily Stevenson went 2-for-3 for West Jefferson. Stevenson had two RBI’s and scored one run herself. Campbell went 2-for-3.
The Trojans start tournament play on Thursday against Yellow Springs.
