Springfield baseball pulls away late in 8-3 win over Northwestern.
SPRINGFIELD — Miamisburg pulled ahead of Springfield with four runs in the third, then pulled away with two runs in the fourth to a 9-5 victory in a GWOC crossover game on Friday night.
After Miamisburg’s first two batters in the third inning grounded out and struck out, the Vikings came alive. Josh Baker reached on an error, and Connor Richey followed with a double to center field to score Baker. Andrew Layton, Adam Giles and Ben Sorg batted in three more runs to give Miamisburg a 5-1 lead.
Springfield quickly battled back in the bottom of the third. Matt Harris scored first off of a single by Kawambee Moss. Nick McCaughey followed with a sacrifice fly to score Ryan Prendergast from second base. Three batters later, Jake Moore hit a ground out to second base to score Moss.
But Springfield walked in two runs in the fourth to give Miamisburg a 7-4 lead, and the Vikings never looked back.
Chris Meyers and Connor Richey went 2-for-4 for Miamisburg, while Giles went 2-for-3 with two RBI’s. Josh Baker also went 2-for-3 and batted in one run. Giles pitched four innings and allowed two hits and one run with three strikeouts. Mike Lauofo picked up the win for Miamisburg.
Moss went 2-for-3 for Springfield with two RBI’s, and Prendergast went 1-for-2 with two walks and scored three runs. Matt Harris picked up the loss for Springfield.
The Wildcats (2-1) play next on Monday at Centerville in a GWOC Central game.
