FAIRBORN — The Fairborn Skyhawks did look like a team that came into a Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover game against Troy with a record of 2-8.
The Skyhawks led by just eight points at halftime and cruised the rest of the game with a commanding 58-35 win over Troy at Baker Middle School on Tuesday.
The Skyhawks started the second half with a 13-0 run to bury Troy.
“Our turnovers were very costly,” Troy coach Paul Bremigan said. “And they just seemed to continue. Our guards struggled tonight but they had help withe miscues. And our post guys struggled to get off shots. I think (Zach) Reichelderfer got only one attempt in the second half. It was that kind of a night.”
Fairborn guard Shaunn Monroe led all scorers with 25 points. He came into tonight averaging 18 points per game.
Monroe had several steals for layups and then got hot from the field scoring eight points in the third quarter. Monroe also hit two 3s in a span of 30 seconds in the fourth quarter to stretch the Skyhawk advantage to 53-27. He was taken out of the game for the last three minutes.
Troy was down by seven points at halftime. Then the roof caved in.
After committing 11 first half turnovers, Troy’s very first offensive possession was another turnover and ended up with Jordan Greene making a 3-pointer. It was his third 3 of the game, and he finished with nine points.
“All we can do is view the film of Stebbins and go from there,” Bremigan said. “We just have to get better at handling the teams pressure. That is about all I can say.”
Reichelderfer scored nine points with siz rebounds after coming into this game with an average of 17 points and 10 rrebounds per game.
Chris Demeo finished the night with seven points and two rebounds for the Trojans. Junior forward Jacob Martinez scored four points and attempted just one shot from the field in the second half. He was limited with the amount of Troy turnovers.
Sophomore Brayden Siler scored four points along with five rebounds. Junior wing Callou Monroe came off the bench and had four points and four rebounds. Senior guard Brenden Kinnel had four points and his shots were limited as well.
The turnover battle ended up with the Trojans gathering 22 compared to the Skyhawks committing eight.
The next game for Troy is a home against Stebbins this Friday. Trojans will be trying to stop a 3-game losing streak. Troy is now 4-7 on the season. Fairborn improves to 3-8 and is on the road at Tippecanoe on Friday.
