Sam Coleman throws for 111 yards and scores two TDs in win.
TROY — A big first half gave the Troy Trojans their first victory of the season over Xenia 28-6 on a rare Thursday night game. It was the Fox 45 Thursday night game of the week.
Jayden Culp-Bishop got things started for Troy by running 32 yards for a touchdown with 8:14 left in first quarter. The drive was sparked by an interception from Zach Boyer who also got another pick later in the game. Quarterback Sam Coleman ran for a TD from 11 yards out. Coleman was back to pass but could not find a receiver so he took off running and scored.
“We told Jayden (Culp-Bishop) that he had a great opportunity with Shane Shoop out with an injury,” Troy head coach Matt Burgbacher said. “It was time for him to step up and show what he is capable of. Jayden has speed and runs well for us.”
After Xenia punted, Troy got the ball on the Xenia 43-yard line and shortly after Coleman connected with Boyer for a 26-yard scoring pass that gave Troy a 21-0 lead.
Troy got the ball to start the second half, and after an interception by Meechie Harris deep in Troy territory, the Buccaneers were in business. Wells then ran it in from 13 yards out and Xenia was on the scoreboard.21-6.
Troy took over on offense and promptly punted, but was helped by a roughing the punter penalty on Xenia that gave Troy a first down. The Trojans could not muster much offense and turned it over on downs.
With a 21-6 lead and the offense limping, Troy running back Sam Jackson gave Troy a big spark by running six times for 66 yards with a 15-yard TD run to put the game away at 28-6.
“We had a great week of practice. You would have never thought that these guys lost 48-0 last week,” Burgbacher said. “The energy the kids showed all week. And at the pep rally. I told our students that we needed them behind us. And our student crowd was loud and crazy. Our goal every week us to go 1-0. We made mistakes but the defense played outstanding for the most part.”
Troy QB Sam Coleman was 9-of-27 in passing for 111 yards with a TD and an interception. Coleman also rushed for 29 yards on 8 attempts. Jayden Culp-Bishop had 70 yards on 16 carries and Koby Feltner got one carry for 4 yards.
Troy is now 1-1 on the season and hosts Bellefontaine on Friday. It will be Hall of Fame Night at Troy Memorial Stadium.
